Siggy and Martin’s wedding at The Lost Music Hall in Totnes was intimate, effortlessly cool and full of character. The whole day took place within the house and its grounds, a wonderfully eclectic setting that suited their wedding perfectly. Nothing felt overly polished or formal. It was stylish, personal and just the right amount of unconventional.

The weather had other ideas when it came to the ceremony. With the rain arriving at exactly the wrong moment, plans for the garden were abandoned and everything was quickly moved inside. The ceremony ended up taking place in the stairwell, which somehow made it even better. Guests gathered closely around them, filling the stairs and hallway and creating something incredibly intimate that could never really have been planned.

The house itself was a dream to photograph. Beautiful old windows, dark corners, archways, wooden floors and pockets of soft natural light gave the morning an almost cinematic feel. Siggy kept everything beautifully understated with a simple silk dress, lace veil and an incredible loose, colourful bouquet, while Martin’s relaxed country tailoring felt completely at home in the surroundings.

Rather than fighting the darker interiors or the grey weather, I leaned into them. We used window light, shadows and the architecture of the house to create portraits that feel a little moodier and more editorial, alongside all the completely unplanned moments happening around them. The result feels wonderfully suited to the day itself: chic, cool and a little bit different.

That is one of the things I love most about photographing weddings like this. The plan can change completely five minutes before the ceremony and it really doesn’t matter. Sometimes a rainy garden and a last minute dash into a stairwell gives you something far more memorable than the original plan ever could.
